Trials

MRG is a very active lab in terms of deploying our platforms in the real-world. We typically maintain a healthy year-round trial schedule locally (in England and the rest of the UK) and regularly embark on ambitious international trips with robots in tow.

Experience the Country

As part of our SAX project, MRG have been working since early 2020 with the team at Experience the Country to capture driving data in a range of off-road driving scenarios of increasing complexity.

Iceland

Red vehicle on glacier in Iceland for trails.

Iceland

In 2019 we travelled to Iceland to outfit a custom off-road truck with a few of our sensors. Our data capturing involved covering some difficult terrain, ranging from dense forests in the pitch dark to the top of a volcano at sunrise.

The 2016 UK Space Agency Mars Utah Rover Field Investigation (MURFI)

The 2016 Mars Utah Rover Field Investigation (MURFI) was a Mars rover field trial run by the UK Space Agency in association with the Canadian Space Agency’s 2015/2016 Mars Sample Return Analogue Deployment mission. MURFI had over 50 participants from 15 different institutions around the UK and abroad. The objectives of MURFI were to develop experience and leadership within the UK in running future rover field trials; to prepare the UK planetary community for involvement in the European Space Agency/Roscosmos ExoMars 2020 rover mission, and to assess how ExoMars operations may differ from previous rover missions.
